The frequent flyers of our backyard Wood Ducks

We have been having many visitors on the thin strip of land just outside the fence of our backyard.  We are on the edge of the Spicket River in Salem New Hampshire.  There have been raccoon, woodchuck, opossum, muskrat, and rabbits but our most frequent visitors as of late are a group of Wood Ducks.  They are the most colorful of the duck family and less common in New England than the Mallards which are the most common in this area of the country. This is a time-lapse video of the past few days.

First Snow of the season

The fist major weather event for New England for the "not even winter yet" event. This system has been reaping havoc around the country during the Thanksgiving holiday week.

[Snow Accum Forecast] Accumulating snow will come in 2 parts. First part through just after midnight tonight, heaviest N of the Pike; Second part Mon night/Tue AM, heaviest eastern MA. This is total accum into Tue morning.

...A LONG LASTING WINTER STORM WILL BRING TWO BOUTS OF SNOW TO
PORTIONS OF THE REGION INTO TUESDAY...

.A complex area of low pressure will continue to develop off the
southern New England coastline tonight. Snow will spread across
southern New Hampshire this evening and into far southwestern
portions of Maine. The snow may be heavy at times along and near
the New Hampshire Massachusetts border as well as over the higher
terrain of southern New Hampshire where snowfall rates of an inch
per hour are possible.

Snow is expected to decrease in intensity during the day on
Monday with another round of heavier snow possible Monday night
into Tuesday primarily affecting southern and central portions of
central Maine as well as eastern portions of New Hampshire.

Due to the long duration nature of this winter storm, storm total
snowfall amounts will continue to be challenging to forecast.
However, the prolonged period of snow will lead to wintry driving
conditions lasting into Tuesday.

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 12
inches into early Monday. Thereafter, a few additional inches
of snow expected, mainly Monday night into early Tuesday.

* WHERE...Portions of central and southern New Hampshire.

* WHEN...Until 7 AM EST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Heavy snow will make travel difficult. This could
affect the morning and evening commutes on Monday.

Visit http://weather.gov/gyx/winter for in-depth snow and ice forecasts including event totals.

Man's best friend

Man's best friend

Mimi 2005 - 2019

The bond between man and their dog is one that is hard to explain but it is as strong as steel. It is a journey that is long and eventful at every turn.  Always ready to go at a seconds notice, your needs above all else (except food).  Morning day or night they are ready to be at your side.  We plan everything we do around their care and comfort and are one of the family.

Mimi joined our family as a small pup as a gift for our daughter.  She has been a part of the family ever since. Through thick and thin her loyalty has never wavered.  This old gal loved her family without judgment always.  Being deaf for the last few years she learned visual cues and always looked you straight in the eye when she was trying to communicate with you. Never yelling, never judgmental, always loving.

Mimi had many health battles towards the end of her journey but always her tail would wag when any of us would approach.  Always loyal, always strong, always willing to lift our spirit when things got tough.

Rest easy now our loyal pup, as we lay you to the earth.  There is no more pain, your struggles are now at ease.  It has truly been a great journey with you at our side.  Your spirit will be with us forever.

Some count sheep when they sleep, Mimi counted Cheez-its

Your family will always love you!  You were our best friend!

Herkimer Diamond Mines #Herkimer #HerkimerDiamond #HerkimerNY #NY

How we spent our summer vacation.  Being avid gem and mineral enthusiasts my wife and I decided our destination would be the Herkimer Diamond mines in New York.  This location has been receiving mixed reviews in the recent past, but those who put in the effort and know what to look for will be rewarded.

We spent about 7 hours at this site with the tools necessary to access these hidden gems.  You can rent a 3lb hammer at the location to break open some of these hidden gems but we suggest bringing your own additional tools.  IE: safety glasses, gloves, pry bar, 5lb hammer, pick, chisel, wedges, ziplock baggies and a 5gal bucket to carry away your treasures.  Many small samples in matrix are easily accessible and will be enjoyed forever!  As can be seen by some of our photo's.

Well worth the effort you put in. Enjoy some of our shots from our trip September 19th, 2018.  We also highly recommend the Herkimer Diamond Mine KOA campgrounds on site across the street.  Great location, nice stream and quiet location to rest inbetween treasure hunts, bracelets are issued by the mine so you may come and go throughout the day.  Any questions about this location feel free to contact us.

Herkimer Diamond is a healing crystal to bring its positive energy into your life. #NeverForget #911

Rescue and recovery worker Donald Anderson of New York City’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) reported to #GroundZero on Sept. 12, 2001. He worked at the site for seven days, operating in 12-hour shifts maintaining a Mobile Field Office Emergency Unit. In addition to keeping generators running and re-charging radios, computers and cell phones, he documented the scene with his camera. His photographs capture not only the incomprehensible destruction, but the cooperation and compassion of rescue and recovery workers. _____ Anderson hoped that the photographs might one day communicate to 9/11 family members the dedication and care that characterized the rescue and recovery efforts. He also wanted to make sure that children too young to understand what had occurred, including his own, as well as those not yet born, would understand what had happened that day. He later shared his archive with the #911Museum. For more photos, click the link in our bio. _____ 📷: 9/11 Memorial Museum Collection, Donald Anderson

BREAKING: Congress just voted to open drilling in the Arctic Refuge

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: "Jamie Williams, The Wilderness Society" <member@tws.org>

Subject: BREAKING: Congress just voted to open drilling in the Arctic Refuge
Cc:

Dear Reader,

It's unconscionable. After 4 decades of American support for keeping the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge protected from oil drilling, Congress has gone behind our backs to open the Arctic Refuge to drilling by voting for their wildly unpopular and secretive tax bill.

The bill contains a sneaky provision to allow oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of the wildest places left on earth, a haven for polar bears, caribou, musk oxen and thousands of migratory bird species.

America's irreplaceable wildlands have experienced a number of attacks in 2017, from Trump decimating Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to Congress just now voting to open drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

We will not stand for this.

There are two things you can do RIGHT NOW to protect our wilderness and fight back against this harmful tax bill:

  1. Sign the pledge to keep fighting for the Arctic Refuge.
  2. Make a tax-deductible donation that will be matched by a generous donor THREE TIMES, up to $1,000,000.

The Wilderness Society will fight at every turn to protect the Arctic Refuge- in the courts, in Congress, and in corporate board rooms. But we need your help. Every dollar you contribute TODAY will go directly to our battle to save our wild places.

Your tax-deductible donation will fund the most important fight of our more-than 80-year existence. Every dollar helps protect our last remaining public lands from the Trump administration, anti-conservationists in Congress and their Big Oil cronies.

Please make a tax-deductible donation to The Wilderness Society right now. All donations today will be MATCHED 3X by a longtime friend of The Wilderness Society, who like you, won't give up in the fight for the preservation of the Arctic. There's no more important time than now.

Donate

Sincerely,

Jamie

Police look for 2 who vandalized Newport Cliff Walk

NEWPORT, R.I. —  Police are looking for two people who vandalized Newport's famous Cliff Walk with spray paint.

Newport Police posted a message on Facebook saying that two women had used spray paint on the walk on Saturday afternoon.

They posted photos of the two walking under the Cliff Walk, with one of them holding what appears to be a can of paint.

Police are asking anyone who can identify the suspects to get in touch.

The 3 ½-mile walk is designated as a national recreation trail and is one of Rhode Island's most popular tourist attractions. It runs between the Atlantic Ocean and many of Newport's most spectacular mansions, and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Dear Adventurer,
Breaking: The Trump administration is recommending lifting the ban on toxic uranium mining near the Grand Canyon.
This ban would have protected the area for decades, but once again, Trump is putting billionaire Big Energy companies like the Koch Brothers first.
I wish I could say I was shocked. But we're past that. All we can do now is fight back with everything we have.
This is desperately urgent, Dave. We are working on the ground and in Congress to secure a permanent ban on dangerous uranium mining in this iconic area and we're not giving it up without a fight. And if it comes to it, WE WILL SEE THEM IN COURT. Please, make an emergency contribution right now.
Donate to save the Grand Canyon region from toxic uranium mining with your emergency monthly gift NOW -- before this spectacular area is decimated by crushers and dotted with slurry pits.
We have taken on Trump and his Big Energy backers before -- and we'll do it again. With your help, we'll mount an aggressive legal strategy, target key decision-makers and mobilize our 3 million supporters to save the Canyon and the Native Americans who have already suffered decades of environmental injustice. Please rush your gift now.
Thank you,

BREAKING: POTUS agrees to gut the protection of Bears Ears Nat’l monument #StandWithBearsEars

We must not destroy our natural lands, these landmarks are far more than magnificent splendors of nature. They are part of our survival. Our natural fauna helps to generate and clean the very air we breath everyday. We must all participate in protecting our future and our children's future.

Corporate greed will destroy our way of life as we know it if we allow it. Protecting our parks reduces pollution and allows us a healthier air to breathe, free of inhalers, antibiotics and chemicals trying to mask illness and make corporations richer due to our dependence on there creations.  Cut the cord and get back to the basics!

The cycle of life is desperately compromised every time man encroaches on natural habitat.

Montezuma Castle National Monument And Montezumas Well Arizona #SeeAmerica #FindYourPark

Today we gaze through the windows of the past into one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. This 20 room high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, tells a story of ingenuity, survival and ultimately, prosperity in an unforgiving desert landscape.

Montezuma Well (Yavapai: ʼHakthkyayva or Ahagaskiaywa), a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument,[1] is a natural limestone sinkhole near the town of Rimrock, Arizona through which some 1,500,000 US gallons (5,700,000 L) of water emerge each day from an underground spring. It is located about 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Montezuma Castle.

The Well measures 386 feet (118 m) in diameter from rim to rim and contains a near-constant volume of spring water even in times of severe drought, amounting to approximately 15,000,000 US gallons (57,000,000 L). The water is highly carbonated and contains high levels of arsenic. At least five endemic species are found exclusively in Montezuma Well: a diatom, a springtail, a water scorpion, an amphipod, and a leech — the most endemic species in any spring in the southwestern United States.[2] It is also home to the Montezuma Well springsnail.

Montezuma Well's steady outflow has been used for irrigation since the 8th century. Part of a prehistoric canal is preserved near the park's picnic ground, and portions of the canal's original route are still in use today.

As with Montezuma Castle, the label "Montezuma" is a misnomer: the Aztec emperor Montezuma had no connection to the site or the early indigenous peoples that occupied the area.
